Hampshire is a place where students are genuinely excited to learn, because they’ve had to take charge of their own education.

Hampshire College is a small, co-educational liberal arts college located in the beautiful Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts. Founded in 1970 to promote progressive, student-led education, Hampshire’s unique program allows students to build personalized curriculums in collaboration with hand-picked faculty advisory committees. Each student’s Hampshire education culminates in a year-long independent project mirroring a master’s thesis. These projects take many forms, including research theses, exhibits, experiments, performances, prototypes, installations, novels, films, animations, software, and beyond. To build self-aware learners, Hampshire professors evaluate students through detailed narrative feedback at the end of each course and on every assignment.

Hampshire is a founding member of the Five College Consortium, which also includes UMass Amherst, Amherst College, Smith College, and Mount Holyoke College. Hampshire students have access to the nearly 6,000 courses and 900+ student organizations offered by the Consortium’s members. The Five Colleges are also connected by a free bus system.

Students have access to Hampshire study-abroad programs in 11 different countries on four continents; they can also participate in ISEP foreign exchange programs at one of ISEP’s 180+ partner institutions around the world.
