'You had to be there': Laughter in Eighteenth-Century Britain

The things that we see fit to laugh at - and how outrageously or reservedly we laugh - have all changed with time, place, and culture. This has compelling possibilities for historians eager to understand the manners and culture of past societies: this talk focuses on eighteenth-century Britain, exploring the period's comic material to argue that society was not nearly as polite as historians once thought.
