Accounting & Finance

Accounting & Finance is concerned with the concepts of money, business and management, with an emphasis on professional careers in this area. The terms 'Accounting' and 'Finance' are not necessarily synonymous with one another. Accounting is concerned with a range of information analysis, for many different aspects of a business. Finance, on the other hand, is concerned solely with the monetary funds of said business.

Professor R Griffith “Does Starbucks pay enough tax?” | Recorded Lecture | The 2015 Annual Public Lecture ”Does Starbucks Pay Enough Tax? – How and Why We Tax Large Multinational Firms” given by Professor Rachel Griffith at The Royal Institution, London.
The idea that large multinational firms avoid paying their fair share of taxes by engaging in tax-avoidance activities is pervasive in the public consciousness. The US and UK media regularly report on the activities of individual firms and the taxes they have avoided. There have been public protests over tax avoidance activities, and the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) has formed a commission to study the issue and made recommendations for reform.
In this lecture Professor Rachel Griffith discusses some of the empirical evidence about the taxes that firms pay on their profits, the avoidance activities they engage in and the implications this has for the government’s ability to collect tax revenue. Surprisingly, there is relatively little evidence that the UK or US lose substantial amounts of tax revenue due to firms’ avoidance activities. This is surprising because it seems that there are ample opportunities for them to do so. Professor Griffith discusses why that might be the case, and some of challenges that governments face in effectively taxing firm profits. | Click Here > | |

KPMG and Tax Havens for the Rich : The Untouchables - the fifth estate | Video | A story of money, secrecy and greed: a tax dodge for the wealthy dreamed up by one of the biggest accounting giants in the world
KPMG Canada devised what it called an “Offshore Company Structure” for a select group of rich clients: they would claim to give away millions of dollars to a shell company supposedly out of their control and therefore wouldn’t have to pay taxes on it.
In the U.S., top KPMG officials were convicted of tax evasion schemes concocted there. But in Canada, a different scheme led to a secret amnesty deal with the Canada Revenue Agency.
A federal government inquiry vowing to get to the bottom of it went nowhere
What was the accounting firm trying to hide?
With revelations from industry insiders, internal KPMG documents and corporate records from the Isle of Man offshore tax haven, we expose the details of the scheme and unveil the names of some of the wealthy clients.
