About the Lecture Series

Gresham College are hosting an economics and history lecture series from October 2023 - April 2024.


The lecture series will the US and USSR's competing visions for the modern world. All lectures will be hosted by Professor Martin Daunton from the University of Cambridge.


Markets and Marxism: USA, USSR and China

Tuesday 31st October 2023, 18:00 BST

Professor Martin Daunton will discuss why the Soviet Union failed when China succeeded during the Cold War.


Asian Tigers: Export-led Growth

Tuesday 6th February 2024, 18:00 BST

Professor Martin Daunton will discuss why East Asian economies were successful in achieving high levels of growth, and how Japan and Korea created a successful export-led growth model.


Import Substitution: A Failed Strategy For Growth?

Tuesday 9th April 2024, 18:00 BST

Professor Martin Daunton will discuss the effectiveness of policies after the Great Depression on industries, state regulation and welfare.
