About the Lecture Series

Gresham College are hosting a law lecture series from September 2023 - May 2024.


The lecture series will tackle the most controversial issues associated with the law of England and the Commonwealth Caribbean. All lectures will be hosted by Professor Leslie Thomas KS from Gresham College.


Race, Disability & Education: Law's Uphill Battle

Thursday 23rd May 2024, 18:00 BST

Professor Leslie Thomas KC will dive into the history of race and disability law in England. He will also examine the impact of discriminatory policies on children of colour and disabled children.

Professor Leslie Thomas KC will explore the origins of the death penalty and its abolition. He will also analyse the Privy Council's role in continuing this practice.


Abortion: Law's Ethical Dilemma

Thursday 30th November 2023, 18:00 BST

Professor Leslie Thomas KC will dive into the history of abortion in English Law. He will critically examine the current abortion law in England and the Commonwealth Caribbean, as well as recent progress in the US.


LGBT Rights: Overcoming a Colonial Legacy

Thursday 1st February 2024, 18:00 BST

Professor Leslie Thomas KC will discuss the long-term impact of homophobic and transphobic laws on Caribbean societies and will discuss the importance for robust constitutional protection of LGBT rights.


Wealth Inequality: English Law's Unintended Legacy?

Thursday 29th February 2024, 18:00 BST

Professor Leslie Thomas KC will critically evaluate the relationship between English Law and Capitalism. He will also explore what legal changes have been made over the last 30 years with reference to the role of lawyers in addressing issues.


Refugees: English Law's Protection or Persecution?

Thursday 18th April 2024, 18:00 BST

Professor Leslie Thomas KC will explore the history of refugee protection, the limits of the Refugee Conventions, and why changes in law have made the lives of refugees difficult.
